EPS 415 Technology & Educational Reform

Dr. Nick Burbules

University of Illinois

Social media are changing education across the globe. We hope to provide insight into the past, present, and necessary future of media in the classroom. Below is a small glimpse of how some of the information provided taught not only the students involved, but the teacher as well.

I am have been a teacher in Dixon, IL for 15 years.  I recently started my graduate degree in Global Studies through University of Illinois.  For my EPS 415 class with Dr. Burbules, I have been researching social media. While doing this, I have come across several of the videos that Dr. Wesch and his students created.  I was so moved by "A Vision of Students Today", that I put together my own group of students to interview and post on YouTube. I gathered a group of my former 13 year old students on July 8, 2010.  My students commented on the Wesch video and expressed their opinions on the role that they felt technology should play in the classroom setting.  My video was viewed by my district Assistant Superintendent, who was very pleased with it.  All this occurred because Michael Wesch's video inspired me to reflect on my own teaching practices, reflect on my districts view of technology in the classroom, and consider all the unique ways that media could be used in my classroom curriculum today.
